A lot of patients do not want to be bothered with being totally dependent
on glasses or contact lenses. Subsequently, these patients elect to
have a refractive procedure done to help reduce their need for glasses
or contacts.
All of the laser assisted refractive procedures
performed by Gulf South Eye Associates are done using the VISX
laser systems with the most advanced upgrades including the WaveScan
custom treatment, active tracker and smooth scan software. The Visx
laser systems use an Excimer Laser; a cool beam laser that has a 1-micron
in diameter beam, which allows a microscopic corneal cell layer to be
removed without damaging any adjoining cells. This allows your surgeon
to make extremely accurate and specific modifications to your cornea.
The precision of the Excimer Laser is proven by its ability to make
notches in 1 strand of human hair without breaking the hair.
The most common refractive procedures that Gulf South Eye Associates
offers are:
- PRK (PhotoRefractive Keratectomy) - abrades
away the epithelial layer of the cornea and uses an Excimer Laser
to reshape the deeper levels of the cornea to help reduce myopia,
hyperopia and astigmatism.
- LASIK (Laser in-situ keratomileusis) -
creates a flap of the epithelial layer of the cornea and uses the
Excimer Laser to reshape the deeper levels of the cornea to help
reduce myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.
- LASEK (laser assisted epithelial keratoplasty)
- creates a flap of the epithelial layer of the cornea using an
alcohol solution. Then the Excimer Laser is used to reshape the
deeper levels of the cornea to help reduce myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism
and presbyopia.

How the Excimer Laser flattens the central cornea for the correction of myopia or nearsightedness.
- CLE (Clear Lens Exchange) - removal
of the eye's natural lens and replaced with an intraocular refractive
power implant. This procedure is usually recommended for patients
who are over 40 years of age or who are not PRK or LASIK candidates.
- CK (Conductive Keratoplasty) - uses radiofrequency
energy to reshape the corneal tissue to reduce farsightedness.
