Why do I wear glasses?

The anatomical shape of an eye determines the refractive error and prescription needed to achieve the best-corrected visual acuity.

Types of refractive errors are:

1. Myopia:
Myopia (near-sighted) means the eye is longer than usual or the cornea is too steep which causes the light rays to focus short of your retina.

2. Hyperopia:
Hyperopia (far-sighted) means that the eye is shorter than usual or the cornea is too flat, which causes the light rays to focus past the retina.

3. Astigmatism:
Astigmatism means that the cornea is uneven, having different curvatures which cause the eye to be in the shape of a football instead of round like a baseball.

4. Presbyopia:
Presbyopia ("over-40-eyes") means that the lens on the inside of the eye is not accommodating as much as needed, hence the need for reading/bifocals glasses.

Today patients have several options available to obtain their best level of vision such as glasses, contact lenses or refractive procedures.
